In a meeting held by Ministry of Human Resources Development and Senates of IIT’s , NIT’s and IIIT’s it was decided that new two-tier examination will be implemented from academic year 2013, which included for IIT’s 50% weightage for 12th board marks and 50% weightage for the JEE main examination to be used as screening and final shortlisting to be done by JEE advanced examination, reportedly this decision to implement a two-tier entrance examination for IIT’s is facing a stiff opposition and dissent from various stake holders of IIT’s including IIT Faculty Federation and IIT Alumni associations.

Reportedly 5 out of 7 IIT senates have opposed the move to implement the new format examination which will take away the academic control from IIT’s. Talking about the same IIT Faculty Federation Secretary A.K.Mittal said “We feel cheated. Despite promising us that no steps will be taken if there is any dissent, the HRD minister has gone ahead,.., We have written to Prime Minister highlighting the practical problems with the new format of examination”.

Among others IIT Delhi Almuni Association is also thinking of taking a legal route to stop the implementation of the new two-tier format of engineering entrance for admission to IIT’s, “The new format will dilute the vision for IIT’s of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the association will go to court if required” said President of IIT Delhi Alumni Association (IITDAA) Somnath Bharti.

Amid all the opposition MHRD is going forward with the implementation of the new JEE for IIT’s , it is also organising a meeting with state education ministers on 5th june to discuss the implementation of the common engineering entrance JEE from 2013 in state level.
