Scores across the boards cannot be compared say experts, T.Ramasami commission ignored experts suggestions

On June 27th meeting in IIT council meeting IIT directors reached on a compromise agreement to hold the common exam. As per compromised agreement students need to score among the top 20 percentile in their Board to be eligible for IIT admissions, this criteria is based on the assumption that students in the top 20 percentile in each board are comparable, but ISI experts do not agree with this. Experts said that scores of students across different schools Boards could not be compared.

What experts suggested:
1. Indian Statistical Institute experts caution against comparing class XII exam performances across different boards
2. They concluded “lack of compatibility of scores from different boards across the country”
3. The experts revised report in 2011 suggested percentile ranks as best way to compare scores
4. But they recommended that their analysis be carried out for all of India’s 29 school boards. Over a longer period of time.

But T.Ramasami commission ignored these suggestions and went ahead with a proposal to give 40 percent weightage to the 12th board scores. A 50% weightage is still suggested to be given to 12th board scores for admission into NIT’s and other engineering colleges joining the new Joint Entrance Exam.
